Radiantly informative: WalkWithMe Media Installation

Living fantasy

The organic shape of the steel structure, inspired by nature, gives it the appearance of a living thing that engages in conversation with the visitor. This effect is reinforced by the screens positioned like heads above the curved tubes. It gives the installation an identity. Is it watching you? Is it wandering through the building? Can you see a forest? Is it a legendary sea monster? The materials used and the shape complement the surrounding objects while responding to the clean lines and hard materials of the building.

While Mannen van Staal were responsible for the robust construction, VJ Pixel handled the lighting software.

Challenge

Forum Groningen sought a way to combine signage, interactive public information, installation art and light technology. The idea was to inform and inspire visitors to the spectacular Forum Groningen. Using a large number of displays, the object presents news and information about exhibitions, films and events in the city of Groningen’s cultural ‘living room’.

One thing is certain, you can’t simply walk past the media installation. It is no accident that the installation is called WalkWithMe.

Materials

The heart of the installation comprises a series of ingenious lightboxes. They are made out of Pyrasied’s Radiant acrylic, which gives an iridescent effect that makes the colour of the surface keep changing according to the angle from which it is viewed. For example, the material changes in appearance depending on whether you are closer to or further away from it. This effect alone grabs people’s attention, let alone the unique shapes of the steel and the information being shown on the display screens.

Materials and technology

Software was developed for the lightboxes to give the object an extra dimension: every hour, the installation takes on a different mood. It even reacts to your presence. Thanks to this interplay of materials and technology, the lighting objects are sometimes transparent, sometimes reflective, sometimes illuminating, and sometimes all three at once. This paradigm shift reinforces the way in which Forum Groningen aims to create a connection with its visitors: by exploring.
