A pharmacy is often purely functional, but with a thoughtful interior design it can certainly become an appealing and inviting place for both visitors and employees. In the north of the Netherlands, in Ommen, is the Ommer Apotheek (Pharmacy) Carrouselplein situated. They chose a complete redesign: a concept that looks modern, fits the medical environment, and above all radiates calm, openness, and accessibility.
“It has truly become an improvement. A complete transformation,” Marianne, MP Interieur, says. “We are very enthusiastic, and so are visitors and employees!”
In an environment focused on health and well-being, it is important that people feel comfortable. The client wanted an accessible, well-organised, and functional layout. In addition to aesthetics, the focus was also on ease of use: sufficient space for products, a pleasant working environment for employees, and smart solutions for daily operations. It’s not just about handing out medication boxes, but about a holistic view of the human body. They not only focus on treating the ailment, but also on lifestyle emotions and environment, which is exactly what pharmacy wants to convey.

For this redesign, MP Interieur and Verhoeven Architectuur & Interieur collaborated on a full concept from A to Z. The entire interior was completely renewed. The entire process took about a year and a half and was carried out in several phases, allowing the pharmacy to remain as operational as possible and continue to welcome visitors.
A key step was determining the colours and materials to create the right atmosphere. Various samples and material options were presented to the client, including samples from Pyrasied. Ultimately, several materials were chosen, such as solid surface and acrylic, each with their own function and appearance. The combination of these materials, colours, transparency, and structures creates uniformity despite their diversity.
Sustainability was high on the priority list: “Sustainability was actually number one,” Marianne says. Materials such as Marlan (Ecolan) and recycled Green Cast acrylic were used because they not only offer a wide variety of colours and textures but are also highly sustainable. The result is an interior that is not only visually appealing and functional but also future-proof.
“Openness was very important. You can see everyone at work, which strengthens the interaction between employees and patients and creates an accessible atmosphere. The company truly comes to life in the space,” the designer explains. “The space originally had a dark, dominant floor. The furniture stood prominently in view and there was little storage. In the new design we looked at how to create more calm, openness, and functionality. It’s such a world of difference.”
By using transparent materials, the space feels larger and more personal.
A real eye-catcher are the custom-made counters in striking Cranberry Red. Seen from above, their shape subtly refers to a liver and kidneys: a nod to the medical character of the pharmacy.
The counters are designed with ease of use in mind, with every detail carefully considered. Spaces for waste bins and medication bags are seamlessly integrated into the design. The built-in cash drawer and cable management ensure a tidy and clean environment. Exactly what you expect from a pharmacy. Additionally, ergonomic adjustable systems have been incorporated into the furniture, tailored to the working positions of the employees.

The design combines functionality with educational and visually appealing features, such as custom tables in the shape of kidneys, a liver, and the DNA counter with red accents. The periodic table plays a prominent role in the canteen and training room. A large board with coloured cubes, inspired by the colours and structure of the periodic system, stands there. “QR codes are integrated into the board; when scanned, they provide additional information about the composition of medications and other details,” Marianne explains.
Another absolute eye-catcher is the illuminated cove, built from coloured panels inspired by the stained-glass details of the second Ommen location. This subtle reference creates a visual connection between both locations and gives the new pharmacy a recognisable and atmospheric accent.

The collaboration between MP Interieur, Verhoeven Architectuur & Interieur, and the client went extremely well. “The client was completely open to new ideas and enthusiastic about everything unique and innovative in terms of materials and design. This gave me full creative freedom. For technical questions, compositions, and drawings, I could always rely on Pyrasied.”
The project also required knowledge of specific pharmacy requirements, such as temperature control, specialised lighting, and the operation of the robot that automatically sorts and dispenses medications. This made the project unique compared to standard interior design projects.
The result is a pharmacy that is both functional and inspiring. The space appears light, open, and transparent, making patients feel welcome while maintaining a clear overview. The custom-made counters and furniture are designed with attention to ergonomics and ease of use, allowing employees to work comfortably and efficiently. Sustainable materials are combined with innovative uses of colour, giving the interior a modern yet warm and inviting atmosphere. Educational elements, such as the periodic table and other thematic details, are subtly woven into the design, enhancing the medical character of the pharmacy.
This project demonstrates that a pharmacy, often purely functional, can evolve into an environment where design, comfort, and efficiency come together.
