Renovation of telecom provider office in Groningen

Office with an open character

The office of a major telecom provider in Groningen has undergone a complete transformation over the past year. Due to the outdated condition of the building, it was time for a thorough facelift. At the same time, this created an opportunity to more strongly reflect the organization’s identity and culture in the interior. The result is a future-proof working environment where functionality, aesthetics, and experience come together.

As hybrid working has become the norm, flexibility was a key focus of the redesign. The space needed to support different ways of working: focused individual tasks, team collaboration, and relaxation and enjoyment. Themes such as privacy, acoustics, and comfort played an important role, without compromising the open and transparent character of the office.

Yannick, Zwartwoud explains: “Openness and connection were central to the design of UP architecten. It had to be an office where people work hard, but also where there is room for relaxation and social interaction. We wanted that balance between focus and enjoyment to be tangible in every space.”

Designing with Transparency and Flexibility

To translate these requirements into a suitable solution, “floating” acrylic partition walls were chosen. These provide a pleasant level of separation between workstations and improve acoustics without sacrificing openness across the floor. Thanks to their transparency, the office remains light and open, while employees still enjoy sufficient privacy.

The acrylic is not only used in the partitions, but also in custom-made furniture, including a large, eye-catching high table that invites spontaneous meetings, collaborative moments, or a quick coffee break.

Challenges in execution

One of the biggest challenges was installing the floating panels. Suspending the acrylic walls from the ceiling required a well-considered structural solution: after all, they carry significant weight, while the suspension system needed to remain as subtle as possible. Thanks to close collaboration between design, engineering, and installation, this was achieved successfully. The result is a visually light system that enhances the sense of space in the interior.

Experience of colour

Based on various material and colour samples, a carefully curated palette was developed that aligns with the telecom provider’s brand identity. The selected colours bring energy and character to the interior and contribute to a recognizable, contemporary look.

The project features materials from the New Colours collection. The combination of colour in both the panel and the edge creates a unique depth of colour that cannot be matched by any other material.

Collaboration & end result

The collaboration between all parties involved ran smoothly and efficiently. “Everything was delivered according to schedule and the final result is a great success,” says Yannick. “The renewed office environment is experienced as pleasant, inspiring, and colourful, clearly reflecting the company’s transformation.”
