Polystyrene

Surprisingly versatile

One of the most widely used materials for making plastics is polystyrene. This material is relatively cheap, water-resistant and durable. Because it is thermoplastic, you can reshape polystyrene material using heat. Pyrasied offers you various possibilities in the field of polystyrene sheet material.

Polystyrene light diffusers

Polystyrene sheets are extremely rigid plastic sheets with a high level of impact resistance. Besides being impact-resistant and UV-resistant, these plastic sheets have virtually no thickness tolerance. This means the sheet has the same thickness throughout. That is why polystyrene is widely used as light panels in suspended ceilings and ceiling-mounted luminaires.

Cost-effective

Polystyrene light diffusers are a cost-effective solution that provides rigidity combined with outstanding light transmission. Polystyrene light diffusers also have food-grade certification and are very easily vacuum-formed.

Advantages of Polystyrene

  • Extremely rigid light diffusers
  • Minimal thickness tolerance so highly suitable for section placement
  • Extremely suitable as light panels in suspended ceilings and ceiling-mounted luminaires

At Pyrasied, you can choose from the following types of Polystyrene

Processing polystyrene diffusers

Polystyrene diffusers are convenient and easy to work with. Our wide range of machinery and extensive knowledge and experience in hand machining mean we can provide you with custom-made diffusers, whether you are working on a one-off project or need a serial production run. Polystyrene light diffusers are easily sawn, milled, bonded, bent, drilled, chamfered and sanded. You can carry out all these processes yourself, but Pyrasied would be happy to carry them out for you.

Polystyrene structure

Textured polystyrene sheets have a surface that directs or refracts light.  They are mainly suitable for applications where light does not necessarily need to be diffused, but where light must specifically hit or avoid a particular area.

At Pyrasied, you can choose between two types of textured polystyrene diffusers: prism texture and micropyramid.

  • Prism texture diffusers direct the light in two directions: in the x and y axes.
  • Micropyramid texture diffusers are sheets with a fine structure that allows light to be scattered or focused better than regular textured diffusers.

Polystyrene satin

Polystyrene satin sheets are quite a bit more efficient than standard clear or opal ones. Polystyrene satin light diffusers have a light transmission coefficient of 71%. Polystyrene satin light diffusers are also rigid and have minimal thickness tolerance. They offer a good balance between diffusion and light transmission. However, the sheets are not UV-resistant. They are therefore unsuitable for outdoor use. Polystyrene’s fire rating is E according to NEN-EN 13501. We recommend not using the diffusers in public spaces or evacuation routes given that polystyrene drips in the event of fire.
